1. This book was one of those projects.

2. Anyone who works for themself or knows someone who works for themselves has seen that faraway stare of someone not altogether present. My wife calls it “going out to the island.”

3. When I visit my wife’s family each summer in Sweden, it seems like the entire country shuts down for like three months. The Swedes have the work-life balance thing completely figured out.

4. The first job I ever had was also a crazy job: working at Spiro Egg Farm off Pine Hill Road. I was twelve. My task was putting eggs into cartons. My role at the New York Times was kind of the same—the news, like the eggs, always came down the conveyor. It never stopped. And it was my job to put it into the correct hole in as orderly a way as possible.

5. It should be known that two years later my father would return to the workforce—he and my mother insisted they needed the money. My guess is it was because my pops got tired of walking my mother’s Yorkshire terriers every single day.

6. I now get anxious when mysterious pains sprout up.
